As Genealogy Researchers we are called upon to go back in time. That means that we are looking at the history surrounding our ancestors. This is especially true of those who looking for People of Color in the Americas. While looking for Slave ancestors we want to see what their condition was prior to or after the Civil War. What was going on politically? Many factors depend on where they were located during and after the Civil War. Those who are seeking information on slavery, also want information on the Underground Railroad.
Once a time line is established, learn about the history of the area, whether local, state or nationally. Look for the churches and schools your ancestor attended. The Anglican and Episcopalian Churches, (and later Catholic), had Mission Schools for children of Native ancestry. Then there was the, Trail of Tears, which included slaves. There were slave holding families who moved from places like Virginia, and Tennessee, into Mid Western and Western States. These facts are important and an integral part of Genealogy Research.
It is important that the history as well as the characters be highlight. Whether it is the Civil War, Revolutionary War, World War II, or the Civil Rights movement, those add color to the information presented. History is the drama that goes on as events unfold.
Genealogy without the context of Social History of the time and place is pretty empty. We need that context, I agree.

While we need the 'facts' about our ancestors in order to put them in a time line, it's what was really going on in their community and as well as nationally that brings our stories alive and gives our ancestors depth of character - that's my favorite part!
